Why therapy on site matters

At Peek A Boo Pediatric Care, therapy is part of the daily schedule. Sessions happen between meals, rest and play, when your child is ready for them. A nurse is always nearby, so a child who uses oxygen, a feeding tube or a trach can take part safely.

Having every therapy under one roof has three practical benefits:

• A shared plan. Nurses and therapists see your child every day and talk to each other about what is working.
• Practice all day. A skill worked on in therapy, like sitting up or holding a spoon, gets practiced again at lunch and during play.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy (PT) focuses on the large movements of the body: strength, balance, posture and getting from one place to another. Sessions take place one on one in our therapy gym.

Depending on your child's goals, PT may work on:

• Head control, rolling and sitting
• Standing and weight bearing
• Walking, including gait training with a walker or gait trainer
• Balance and coordination through play, like reaching, catching and climbing
• Using and getting comfortable with equipment such as braces or standers

Most sessions use play. Shooting a ball at a low hoop, for example, works on standing balance and reaching.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children with the skills they use every day. Where PT is about big movements, OT often focuses on the hands, the senses and daily routines.

• Fine motor skills. Grasping, stacking blocks and using child-safe scissors.
• Self-care. Learning to feed themselves and help with dressing, at the child's own pace.
• Sensory processing. Helping children who are sensitive to touch, sound or movement feel more comfortable.
• Play skills. Learning to use toys with purpose, which builds attention and problem solving.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy supports communication in whatever form fits your child. For some children that means first words. For others it means signs, pictures or a communication device.

Speech therapists also help with feeding. Children who have trouble chewing or swallowing may work on oral-motor skills and safe swallowing, in coordination with the nurses who manage their feeding plan. Because therapists see mealtimes at the center, they can watch how a child eats in a real setting, not only in a session.

Respiratory therapy and ABA

• Respiratory therapy. Breathing treatments and trach or ventilator support for children with breathing needs.

How families get started

For children who qualify, PPEC is covered by Florida Medicaid and eligible families pay nothing out of pocket. Enrollment needs a physician's prescription and prior authorization from Medicaid or your managed-care plan. Each therapy is prescribed based on your child's needs and may need its own authorization, and our team handles that paperwork with you.
